Once a year Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars of the small screen gather to honour the best shows on television. The Emmy’s is without a doubt our favorite award show and we fully stayed awake till 4 in the morning to watch it live! Here’s what happened:
-The red carpet was fun not only because of all the pretty celebrities but also because it was really hot and it was amusing to be reminded that stars get sweaty like us.
-Jimmy Kimmel hosted the night (we loved him ever since he stole childrens candy) and came in on Khaleesi’s dragon. There was also a bit halfway through the show, fresh after Kimmel’s own show lost out on the Best Variety Series category when his life long (joke) enemy Matt Damon came out to laugh at him that had us in stitches.
-Jimmy Kimmel did something we’ve been dying to do for a few years now- he called Maggie Smith out! The Downton Abbey actress has been nominated a ton of times and even though she often wins, she never comes! She won again this year but Jimmy seized the trophy, saying he’s putting it in the lost and found.
-After that was the comedy category. Aziz Ansari and his writing partner, Alan Yang, won the Outstanding Writing category, an amazing feat for non-white people in America. The moment got weird though when Alan Yang made a speech and Ansari awkwardly ran off the stage when it was turn.
-Julie Louis Dreyfus won as per usual but the comedy star turned her usually funny acceptance speech into a sombre moment as she broke down while thanking her dad, who passed away a few days ago.
-Amy Poehler finally won an Emmy! Well sort of. She shared the award with her best friend Tina Fey for their appearance on Saturday Night Live. The two split their trophy in half and gave a pretty funny speech about it.
-The People vs OJ Simpson cleared out pretty much everything it was nominated for, including acting nods for Courtney B Vance and Sterling K Brown; another win for non-white folk in Hollywood.
-Rami Malek beat out some truly talented actors and took home the Lead Actor in a Drama series trophy. You could tell he was truly shocked and touched to win and we couldn’t be happier for him.
-Tatiana Maslany finally got some recognition for her AMAZING work in Orphan Black and won Lead Actress in a Drama. She plays clones for goodness sake. Is it easy!?
-Veep won Best Comedy which made us extra happy because we just started the new season and it truly is one of the funniest things out there right now. And Game of Thrones won Best Drama, because Battle of the Bastards.
And just like that, it was all done. What was your favorite part of the show? What wins (and losses) surprised you the most? Let us know in the comments below.
