A Real Madrid fan’s demand for a replay of the match that saw Barcelona defeat PSG 6-1 over the weekend, has gotten more serious as over 100,000 fanatics have joined the petition.
Barcelona’s triumph had booked them a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but fans believe there was foul play in the refereeing.
The match, which saw Barcelona score three goals in the last five minutes, was hailed as ‘the greatest comeback in football history,’ as Sergi Roberto’s stoppage time finish capped off a miraculous performance.
On the premise of poor refereeing by Deniz Aytekin, football fanatics are demanding a replay of the match.
A Real Madrid fan, Luis Melendo Olmedo, set up the petition on change.org, asking that UEFA strike the result from the record.
Olmedo referred to “incidents that seriously damaged PSG as a result of the German referee, Deniz Aytekin, who gave Barcelona an advantage with his refereeing decisions” as the inspiration behind the petition.
Aytekin was heavily criticised for his performance in the Nou Camp, where the match held, after he gave two controversial penalties for Barcelona and turned down PSG’s appeals for a spot-kick when Javier Mascherano slid in on Angel Di Maria.
Proof-worthy was the fact that Barcelona defender, Javier Mascherano admitted he had fouled Di Maria in the penalty area with the Argentine closing in on goal.
“I made contact with Di María. It’s obvious it was a foul. I’m not going to lie about it,” he told newsmen.
But despite the number of people who have already signed the petition, the absence of any such appeal from PSG means there is no prospect of UEFA ordering an unprecedented replay.
It is, however, laughable, that Barcelona’s hopes of winning La Liga were dealt a devastating blow on Sunday evening as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to 17th placed Deportivo La Coruna.
