Many shows today seldom have the same political intrigue, magnetic characters, engaging story telling and an epic medieval adventure the way Game of the thrones did. There will probably never be another like it. However, ever since it ended I think we can all agree this empty need to be filled ASAP. This is why we’ve compiled a list of shows that contain similar thematic elements to Game of Thrones.

The Tudors

The Tudors focuses on the rarely dramatized, tumultuous early years of King Henry VIII of England’s nearly 40-year, omnipotent reign (1509-1547). Jonathan Rhys Meyers is all dash and panache as the star of the historical soap opera, which bursts at the seams with sex, political intrigue, sex, dangerous court and did we mention sex.

The show focuses on the teenage Mary Queen Scots and Prince Francis during their reign in medieval France. Sent to France to wed its next king, to save herself and her people in Scotland she instead encounters evil forces that conspire, and connive with treacherous plots that deal the heart at court. Long may she reign.

The tale of King Arthur is certainly a tale as old as time with different variations told of the fable Hero. However, Merlin, as the title entails focuses on the young sorcerer during his formative years as a bumbling apprentice before he became the legend that he is today. It may be tepid with its political intrigue but makes up for it with dark sorcery, magic and a talking dragon.

Unlike the previous shows above, Succession, is set during our modern times. Succession follows a dysfunctional (reminiscent of the Lannister clan) American global-media family as each sibling vies for the next position as the CEO of the largest media conglomerate in the world. So if you’re looking for some power struggle seasoned with family drama this is your guy.
