Chelsea have definitely surpassed expectations in their first season under Frank Lampard in the midst of a transfer ban and constant injuries to first-team players like Kante, Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi.
Also, following a year of no signings, the Blues have managed to stay in the Premier League top four and have also recorded good points against top-six opposition. However, it has been made abundantly clear that Lampard will need reinforcements if he is to start challenging for trophies again.
Chelsea will definitely need Champions League football, to attract the players they need to stay at the top and new players to replace some of the aging faces who will be on the way out.
Here are five players that Chelsea should sign during the summer transfer window:
1. Timo Werner
Timo Werner is on red hot form right now, with 20 goals in 20 appearances for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga so far this season. The German striker has been linked to Liverpool especially, but Chelsea should try their best to add him to their ranks
Kepa Arrizibalaga has greatly underwhelmed since the beginning of this season He cost Chelsea a £71.2 million and so far, the Spaniard has disappointed. Lampard was forced to drop the Spaniard back in February due to awful displays and should be looking to sign Onana, the Cameroonian goalkeeper, who has performed consistently for Ajax. His heroics in goal helped Ajax, reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. The 24-year-old is reportedly interested in testing his talents in the Premier League and Chelsea are in the best position to offer him regular playing time.
Edison Cavani asked to leave Paris Saint Germain in January and Chelsea were rumored to be interested in the striker, but PSG rejected the striker’s request. Even going as far as rejecting a bid from Atletico Madrid. Cavan isn’t contract is up in the summer, Chelsea would be a good place to finish his career, while also serving as a role model for young striker, Tammy Abraham.
4. Philippe Coutinho:
Barcelona are trying to get rid of Countinho, who hasn’t live up to expectations since his move to Barcelona. The player is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, who are reportedly not keen on making his transfer permanent. Coutinho is premier league proven, and his creativity and eye for goal would be a great addition to the Chelsea side, which seems to be lacking players in those areas.
5. Nathan Ake:
When Ake left Chelsea for Bournemouth, there were mixed feelings around the club. This was a solid defender, who was also capable of playing as a left-back or central back. He’s been one of the most consistent Central backs in the league of recent and he’s about to enter his prime years, as he’s just 24 right now. Chelsea have a £40 million buy-back clause with the Dutch defender and he might be just what they need to strengthen their defensive options for the 2020/2021 season.
