On Thursday 20th October, Uhuru Kenyatta, who is the president of Kenya, released 7,000 prisoners.
The reason for this we learnt, is to make room for corruption offenders.
The release was announced in a speech given by Mr. Uhuru at the National Heroes day ceremony. He stated that, the prisoners who had been released were convicted of minor offences and are almost done with their jail terms.
Mr. Uhuru also stated that he would decongest the prisons so as to give room for judges to send more corruption offenders to jail.
He stated further that, the Kenyan prisons houses 56,000 inmates, which is double the capacity of the 118 correctional facilities.
