Our Accelerate Entrepreneur of the week is a young, enterprising male brand fashion designer and stylist. His name is Daniel Opusunju but we like to call him by his brand name, Jahda.
Jahda is a Hebrew name that means ‘whom Jehovah directs’, but according to the handsome, creative designer, his brand name stemmed from a combination of ‘Jah’ meaning ‘Jehovah’ and ‘Da’ was culled from his name, Daniel.
Daniel began his fashion and design journey back in 2012 when he was only 22 years old.
Although he was engaged in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Enugu at the time, it was love that drew Daniel to the enterprise of his dreams.
Jahda told Accelerate TV that “Actually, my venture into fashion and design was not exactly intentional. In fact, I did not take it serious at first, but eventually, I caught on to it. At the time, my then girlfriend and I were serving in Enugu State and I was serving in a school so we had the three months long holiday, but I did not want to travel and leave her behind. So I enrolled with a female tailor who taught me how to sew female clothes.
I was absolutely unserious and the lady got fed up with me every now and then. But eventually, I realised I did not want to waste my time doing nothing, so I decided to at least learn this properly. Today, I am happy I made that decision.”
Daniel holds a BSc in Chemistry from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and only worked in an office for about three months of his life.
He realised he was not cut out for the office environment and quit to expand his fashion business afterwards.
The Jahda office is housed in Ikeja area of Lagos State and employs four staff. Wow!
The young entrepreneur got his big break when he collaborated with Vlisco/Woodin and he is ever grateful for that.
“I have styled many celebrities, including Pastor Sam Adeyemi, Okey Bakassi, Don Jazzy, Baby Fresh, among others and I am the official stylist and dressmaker for Korede Bello, Woli Arole and Some Daystar Christian Centre’s Pastors,” he bragged.
His latest design is the trendy modified agbada style, which he named: Jagaban.
Jagaban is a new, impressive blend of the Yoruba Agbada with Kaftan and Dansiki combined. A perfect ensemble for stylish Nigerian men.
