A costly 0-0 draw at home to Peru has left Argentina on the brink of missing out of next year’s World Cup and their fans on the verge of a heart break.
A flurry of late goals from Paraguay and Chile meant that Argentina’s task to qualify was made the more complicated.
If Peru’s tactics was to stop the source of supply to Messi, and prevent him from combining with his teammates, then they really did it perfectly well as Messi and co had no key to unlock Peru.
A win for Argentina in the final round away to Ecuador at Quito which is more than 2,800 metres above sea level and in conditions they traditionally despise, will be good enough but they will also hope that Peru and Colombia falter.
Peru are one place ahead of Argentina in fifth place with both teams on 25 points each and the same goal difference of plus 1.
