An Australian cartoonist Mark Knight has denied any racist or sexist meaning to his depiction of Serena Williams at the US Open, after the image was criticized.
The cartoon showed an angry Williams jumping above a broken racquet next to a baby’s dummy while a Naomi Osaka who was depicted as a white was talking with the umpire with the caption “Can you just let her win?”.
This comes after Williams sparked controversy during her loss to Osaka when she accused the umpire of sexism and being a “thief”.
However, Knight has denied it as racist, saying he had intended to depict only the tennis player’s “poor behaviour”, a claim which was backed by the newspaper’s editor, Damon Johnston.
