South African Kevin Anderson has bowed out of the Australian Open after he was stunned in four sets by American Frances Tiafoe.
Anderson lost 6-4 4-6 4-6 5-7 to world number 39 Tiafoe who has never progressed beyond the second round in Melbourne.
In other matches in the male category, Marin Cilic beat Mackenzie McDonald 7-5 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 6-4 while world number one Novak Djokovic world number 230 ranked American qualifier Mitchell Krueger 6-3 6-2 6-2.
World number three and defending champion Roger Federer defeated Britain’s Dan Evans 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) 6-3
In the female category, defending champion Caroline Wozniacki eased into the third round of the Australian Open with a straight-set win over Sweden’s Johanna Larsson. She beat Larsson 6-1 6-3.
In another stunner, world number 240 Kimberly Birrell stunned 29th seed Donna Vekic 6-4 4-6 6-1 to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.
American Sloane Stephens defeated Hungary’s Timea Babos 6-3 6-1 while Simona Halep rode her luck against Kaia Kanepi finishing top with a 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-2 win.
However, it wasn’t to be for a tearful Victoria Azarenka as she lost 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-2 to 110th-ranked Laura Siegemund.
Azarenka recovered from a child custody dispute with her husband last year and has since not returned to form.
