British men’s number one Kyle Edmund was also an upset victim after a disappointing 6-3 6-0 7-5 first-round loss to Tomas Berdych in a tournament many pundits expected more.

Meanwhile, 17-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal defeated James Duckworth 6-4 6-3 7-5 to reach the second round while South African fifth seed Kevin Anderson saw off France’s Adrian Mannarino in four sets 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1.

Matches still continues today in courts one and two in Melbourne.
