Victory is sweet. However, it is sweetest when it comes against your arch-rival. This was the case with Real Madrid and Barcelona in the El Classico on Sunday.
Barcelona bounced back in spectacular fashion after being knocked out of the UCL by Juventus to beat Madrid 2 goals to 3 at the Bernabeu with Lionel Messi starring.
Messi scored his 500th Barcelona goal to send the Catalan club to the top of La Liga with 92nd winner against 10-man Real Madrid. Sergio Ramos had been red carded in the 77th minute by referee Alejandro Hernandez as a result of a lunge on Messi.
Carlos Casemiro scored the first goal in the 28th minute for Madrid before Messi and Ivan Rakitic put Barcelona in the lead. James Rodriguez equalised in the 85th minute thinking he had earned a draw for his team.
However, Messi had other ideas. He scored his 500th Barcelona goal with a sweeping low shot to beat Navas from 15 yards after a brilliant run by Sergi Roberto and overlapping by Alba.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo will be wondering what perspired during the match as he missed chances upon chances and watched in despair as Messi enveloped him.
Despite Barca’s win, Real Madrid still have their destiny in their hands as they have 6 games to play while Barca has five. Barca only leads the Spanish La Liga because of a better head-to-head record.
