Black Panther has become the first film since James Cameron’s Avatar to top the weekend box office for five straight weekends.
This left second place to the MGM-Warner Bros.’ rebooted “Tomb Raider,” starring Alicia Vikander as the archaeologist adventurer Lara Croft. The $90 million film opened with $23.5 million, largely failing to stir much excitement among moviegoers.
“Black Panther,” starring Chadwick Boseman as the superhero king of a utopian African country, Wakanda, has almost single handedly kept the year’s box office total slightly above the same period last year.
It is only days away from overtaking another Marvel film, “The Avengers,” as the all-time top-grossing superhero film in North America.
