Grammy-nominated artiste Burna Boy took to social media to call-out his colleagues for being pretentious and also claim he’s the best Nigerian artist since Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

“FACT! I always knew I was and I am THE BEST. Everyone you think is the best KNOWS I’m BEST since Fela Kuti. But @timayatimaya told me something a long time ago that made me not care about being the best. “The World can do without the Best” the world will still spin regardless.”

Obviously, this got the twitterverse riled up and when a fan replied , “Where were you since 2010-2018? I mean where the f**k are you when Afrobeat was struggling to hit the mainstream? The BEST paved the way for you. You came In when the table has already been set and here you’re claiming the BEST since Fela.”

Burna then came back with a braggadocios reply, “NOBODY paved shit for me. Everybody dey find them own. I bin Out here, if you knew the way they made us look weak by begging and paying the western world to like us you will see that no table was set and I’m the one that brought you the Respect you currently enjoy.”

Two important questions however.

Is Burna right for saying Nobody paved sh*t for him? Nope, because a lot of artists did pave the way him, D Banj, P-Square, Wizkid, Davido, to name a few paved the way for him, these artistes took our music abroad intentionally or unintentionally. And i get it, because someone did it before you doesn’t mean they made the way for you, but this is a movement and the sounds that were exported and played on radio abroad before Burna definitely added to the curiousity and the popularity afrobeats is getting right now.

Burna is however reaping the fruits of his hard work and talent and the little bit of luck that is needed to make an artist ‘blow’. Now that afrobeats is on the rise, the stars have finally aligned for him and he’s at the forefront of the movement

Is he the best since Fela Kuti?, to be honest, this is just a matter of opinion and in my opinion, he isn’t. I however feel every artist should feel like they are the best every time they get on the mic or every time they perform, because in this game and like everything in life, you either come correct or don’t come at all.
