Cameroonian attacker Joel Tagueu on Tuesday was in the starting XI for match for the first time since having to leave the Africa Cup of Nations finals in mid-year after the discovery of a life-threatening heart defect.

The 25-year-old was in the starting line-up for Brazil’s Cruzeiro as they lost 1-0 at Vasco da Gama on Tuesday, getting 45 minutes in the tank before being withdrawn

Tagueu had previously made three appearances off the bench for the Belo Horizonte-based club in the Brazilian league in his comeback after being diagnosed with a heart defect in June.

Cameroon’s doctors ordered he be removed from the Indomitable Lions squad ahead of the start of the Cup of Nations finals but Tagueu has since been given an all-clear to resume his career.

However,  he is still to have recommended surgery, even though he has been cleared by cardiologists in Brazil.

He is expected to return to Portuguese club Maritimo in January after his loan spell in Brazil comes to an end.
