News Agency of Nigeria had earlier reported the death of a woman, three of her children, and three of her neighbour’s children resulting from the consumption of a cassava meal flour, the finished product of the cassava tubers harvested from the woman’s farm at uhuepe village, Kogi State.
According to the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Olatunde Alabi, two more persons, a 42 years old woman and a 10 years old boy who partook in the meal died on Thursday at the Federal Medical Center, Lokoja.
Mr. Alabi stated that a third victim, a girl of about 13 years old is in a critical condition.
The CMD has stated that, the cause of death has not yet been ascertained, although it is suspected to be cyanide poison from the cassava meal.
He stated that the government is keen on finding the cause of death and has shown readiness to send blood samples of the victims for detoxincology test in South Africa.
The said victims of the poisoning reside in the Ogaminana Adavi Local Government Area of the state.
