The Champions League group stage came to an end on Wednesday night as matchday 6 was full of excitement and entertainment. In a fight for a spot in the round of 16, teams left it late to qualify with about 4 groups yet undecided. Here are some keynotes you should take note of;
Cristiano Ronaldo broke yet another record in the champions league by scoring in all 6 games of the group stage, netting 9 in total. Yet another Milestone for the Portuguese talisman who looks forward to receive his 5th Ballon d’Or.
The English teams highly represented in the champions league with all five qualifying for the round of 16 setting a new record, as its the first time 5 teams from one country would be in the round of 16.
With Man Utd, Man City, Tottenham and Liverpool qualifying top of their Groups, except for Chelsea who finished 2nd behind Roma, level on 11 points each, Roma finished top based on head to head beating Chelsea 3-0 and drawing 3-3
This leaves Chelsea with the possibility of facing PSG or Barcelona in the round of 16.
Also, a new champions league record was broken last night as the total goals in the group stage rounded up to 306 – a new record. With PSG and Liverpool grabbing the bulk of it with 25 & 23 respectively.
Kloop’s “Fab Four” ran riot scoring 7-0 with Philippe Coutinho scoring a Hat-trick, Sadio Manè a Brace and one each for Firmino and Salah . Liverpool also broke the duck of penalties in front of the Kop with Coutinho converting the penalty for his first goal, after missing 4 of their previous penalties.
