Chelsea is set to complete the signing of the Athletic Bilbao’s young goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for a record fee of €80 million after the youngster paid his release clause to La Liga earlier today.
The Blues are in goalkeeping limbo after their number one keeper Thibaut Courtois failed to turn up for training two days after the expected date of resumption.
The 23-year old Spanish second choice keeper is now due in London later today to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms.
The deal will break the club’s previous transfer record, set last season when the Blues signed Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid in a £70m deal and will also break the record for a goalkeeper set by Liverpool in their £65m purchase of Allison last month.
As soon as the deal is completed, Courtois will be free to complete his switch to Real Madrid.
