Chelsea’s 2 nil loss to Manchester United on Sunday has thrown the EPL title race wide open.
The Blues lost the opportunity to pull further away from Tottenham Hotspur which is breathing down their neck. Spurs had thrashed Bournemouth 4 nil at home. Now, only 4 points separate both teams.
Surprisingly, this is the first time this season, Chelsea appeared vulnerable and clueless. This perhaps gives credence to Frank Lampard’s assertion that Chelsea is nervous about the run of Spurs. They had no answers to rampaging Manchester United whose coach, Jose Mourinho abandoned his defensive style for a more attack-minded tactics.

This tactic worked as United were in front as early as the 7th minute through a Marcus Rashford volley which comfortably beat Thibaut Courtois. Courtois has had only 13 clean sheets this season after 31 appearances. This is not very good for a goalkeeper of Courtois calibre.
Chelsea was stunned. Regardless, they played for an equaliser but when the ball got to Blues striker Diego Costa, he always seemed to end up on the ground because Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly did not give any space to play.
In the 49th minute, Antonio Conte’s teams’ defensive frailties were exposed after Ashley Young dribbled into the box as Kante gave the ball away. The ball fell to Ander Herrera who struck it through a bunch of bodies and it deflected over and into the net for the second goal.
The second goal was a welcome relief for Mourinho who will be happy he had one over his former club.
As for Tottenham Hotspur, they will be ecstatic by Chelsea’s loss. In fact, they have the chance to cut Chelsea’s lead to 1 point if they defeat them on Saturday.
Spurs have the momentum but will they do the needful by beating Chelsea? Saturday beckons.
