I can’t be the only one who has been struggling with working out at home and staying healthy. I don’t know whether it’s a lack of motivation or lack of energy or just plain laziness but I’ve not been able to get myself to do one single form of exercise since this lockdown started. I’m sure a lot of people are on this table too but don’t worry, nobody is judging you, especially not me.

So on Twitter, I follow this guy called Chidubem, who is a fitness junkie. He’s always constantly tweeting about keeping fit and always giving weight loss and diet tips to anyone on the timeline who is ready to listen. And since this lockdown started, he has been seriously hammering on people about working out at home and not slacking off simply because they’re at home.


I always feel like these things are easier said than done for most people and that’s why I decided to reach out to him to find out how he was dealing with keeping fit during this lockdown, and maybe give me some advice on exercising at home and eating healthy.

Here’s how that went:

Okay, my first question is, as a fitness junkie, how have you been surviving being away from the gym for so long?

I do home workouts that include majorly bodyweight exercises and I have a little gym set up here at home too.


For people like me, working out at home is a bit difficult, there’s usually no motivation. How do I motivate myself to workout at home?

Motivation is usually the hardest part of working out. For me, I motivate myself with some methods.

1. I check out motivational gym videos on YouTube- it always pumps me up especially the ones from Ben Lionel Scott

2. I usually check up on my role models; Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart- seeing their progress always gets me in the right mind frame

3. Music- somehow listening to songs with real-life inspirational lyrics just always sets my mind in the right space.

Everyone is different, you just need to find what actually motivates you and use it for your fitness journey


So I have a friend who is obsessed with getting buff, and now that he’s at home he’s afraid that he’s going to lose weight cause he’s not going to the gym. What can he do at home to still maintain his weight and still get buff?

He should work on bodyweight compound exercises. Push-ups (closed, wide, & normal), pull-ups and chin-ups, then squats and lunges.

He can start with 10 reps and 3 sets per exercise, As he keeps on working out and getting stronger, he will need to increase reps to get better.

Also eating well too is key; good carbs and protein are very essential in his everyday meals.

Then finally rest well (he can alternate days: 2 days workout, 1-day full rest) and good sleep.


How do I maintain a healthy diet during this lockdown?

Stock up on healthy food. Good carbs like potato, yam, plantain, rice, beans, etc. Also for breakfast, you can have oats, golden morn, and any high fiber cereal. Then don’t forget to include your sources of protein too; your meat, eggs, fish, etc.  I recommend having healthy snacks to avoid eating junk at midnight or when you’re bored. Foods like nuts (groundnut, cashew nut, almond nut), dark chocolate, Greek or low-fat yogurt, fruits, sugar-free popcorn, etc.


How do I stop myself from eating every hour?

LOL you need self-control honestly. Eating every hour needs discipline. Although if you eat more proteins in your meals, you’ll get filled up more and won’t be able to eat every hour.


What are some foods that I should avoid?

That depends on your fitness goal really. But generally, everyone should avoid eating more junk food and focus on eating good healthy carbs. There are good and bad carbs. Bad carbs are the simple carbs; those ones contribute to stomach fat: white bread, flour, white rice, etc. Good carbs are complex carbs; they are perfect for you: yam, plantain, wheat, oats, potato, etc. Limiting the foods that are not good for you is better and more realistic because you can never really avoid food.


What are some exercises I can do at home to lose weight?

For losing belly weight, you can do more of crunches, mountain climbers, sit-ups, leg raises and flutter kicks.

But general body weight, you’ll have to focus on cardio and high-intensity workouts like Jogging or using the treadmill, toe taps, walking lunges, high pace walking, jumping jacks, etc. 


What’s your opinion on yoga? Do you recommend it?

I haven’t tried it but yeah it looks amazing and I know it does the body good. Yes I totally recommend it.


What YouTube channel would you recommend for people like me who want to exercise at home?

Simeon Panda has a good YouTube Channel for men or people in general who are trying to buff up. I have watched some of his videos and it’s legit so yeah I would recommend him.
