The Ondo State police of the Funbi-Fagun Division, have arrested a couple and two others over the alleged offense of child trafficking.
The couple whose names were given as Ayobami and Mujidat Wahab and two other women are reported to be specialists in the street begging business.
According to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the station, Mr. Olu-Ojo Ogunmoyole, the suspects on daily basis, move around the city with the children leading them as blind people.
One of the suspects, Folashade Iyiola, who confessed to the crime said she was introduced to the business by Mujidat who convinced her to get two under-aged children for the business. She said she abducted the two pupils in two different locations in Ibadan and brought them to Ondo state.
One of the victims, Ibrahim, a primary six pupil narrated how he was abducted at Ibadan on the day of Ileya festival by Folashade. He said ” I was at Idi-ape in Ibadan on the day of Ileya festival when the woman held me in my hands- after some minutes I couldn’t get myself again, before I could open my eyes, I met myself in Ondo city. I slept for two days before I could get myself back. Few days later, we started the street begging business, it was on Saturday the first town we visited was Akure and we made a lot of money, they gave us cooked rice at one of the ceremonies where we visited.”
“When we got back home they gave me food and told me that my money is N500 on each outing.”
The boy stated that, it was as a result of the constant dreams he had, where his mother usually cries and requested him to return home that caused him to connive with Fatai, another child victim to run away to Ibadan. It was in the cause of their escape that a woman who had been generous to them called the police to their rescue. They provided the police with useful information that led to the arrest of the culprits.
The DPO stated that the matter will be transferred to the top the Ondo state police headquarters for further investigation and prosecution of the culprits.
