Mule, a French word, is a style of shoe that is backless and often close-toed. Mules can be any heel height – from flat to high. The style is predominantly (but not exclusively) worn by women.
They can have high sleek stiletto, low or chunky heels.
Mules were popular in the early 50s ,60s,70s, 80s and even reemerged in the late 90s in the open toed form called the slide. The backless shoe has received a youthful makeover; you can now choose your own adventure with these shoes.
High-heeled mules were a popular indoor shoe style of the 18th century, influenced by the patten, a backless overshoe of the 16th century. By the early twentieth century, mules were often associated with prostitutes.
Today however, mules are one of the first choices for the trendy lady.
