Comic Republic, Nigeria’s comic leading studio, held this year’s convention at the Freedom Park, Lagos.

Comic Connect 2019

As difficult as it is to break through in a rare field in Nigeria, Comic Republic has been persistent in growing its brand. Everyone who is a part of it is passionate about creating and promoting their unique style of comics.

Comic Republic, also known as CR, has a licensed main character ‘Guardian Prime’ with Aviva Notebooks and converted a well-known Nigerian DJ with a large fan base into one of their leading titles. CR’s website consists of free comics which have been downloaded over 100,000 times so arranging a productive event where all the fans can meet and socialize was a logical idea.

ComicConnect2018-02

This year’s Comic Connect included activities such as Digital Art Battle, Digital Art Festival, and The Cosplay. All these activities had cash prizes worth 100K. They also had the Comic Cliniq where rising comic creators, writers, and artists received one-on-one free consultation from the experts at Comic Republic.

We got to take a look at their most recent project, a new animated movie for ‘Guardian Prime’ which appears enchanting. The Guardian is still a work in progress as the Superhero doesn’t look as buff as he is in the award-winning comic titles but we were assured that the final version would be much better.

Panel sessions held comprised of top-notch people like Niyi Akinmolayan of AntHill Studios, Kenneth Uphopho, festival director of LagosFringe, Oye Akindeinde of Boomplay, Ayo Jaiyesimi, Gbenga Awomodu, Brian Barasa, and Tunji Andrews. They engaged in interactive sessions discussing comics and the opportunities in music, theater, festivals, tech and animations.

The Comic Connect then ended with a party called the ‘Beatz AfterParty’ led by DJ Sose. Everyone turned up and enjoyed their time.

Comic Republic is a stepping stone for the comic industry in Nigeria. They are responsible for popularizing indigenous Nigerian comics and Superhero characters which is noble in our country. The future looks bright for comic artists not only in Nigeria but also in Africa at large.
