Arese, whose full name is Agbarese Emokpae, is from Lagos state and was born there as well. She graduated from Washington and Lee University in 2010, and has been part of various musicals and stage performance in Nigeria and the United States. We sat down for an interview with the winner of the maiden season of The Voice Nigeria and got to know a little bit about her. And it turns out, Arese is not only an awesome singer, but has a pretty fun, vibrant personality as well.
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Arese, I am 28 years old and I just got done with The Voice Nigeria, I guess now I am a recording artiste. I used to work in stage so here I am now, I am a musician.
What was it like being on The Voice?
Being on The Voice was a great experience it’s like the best thing I have ever done in my whole life and I knew that it was going to be when I went in and am glad that it turned out the way it did.
When did you uncover your love for music?
I think I have always loved music. I have been told, obviously I don’t remember because this happened a long time ago but I have been told that when I was a baby like a toddler in my mother’s arms, I used to try and sing along with the church song, you know, the choir in church. There’s one particular story my mom always told me. I think I was maybe a year and a half or two years old and I was singing something in church and there was a man in front of her turned around and said ‘that girl is going to be a singer’. I have never told anyone that story before but my mom always tells me. From a very very young age, maybe I was five years old when I first started to follow along with music videos and things like that. I have always, always loved music and the performing arts.
When you hear fashion, what comes to mind?
When I hear fashion, what comes to mind is expression, uniqueness. It’s your sense of style which is like the first thing people see meet aside from maybe your smile or something. They notice what kind of shoes you like to wear or you know what clothes you are wearing that day. It’s your way of telling the world who you are before you ever open your mouth to say ‘Hi, my name is Arese’.
So, do you think there is a synergy between the two art forms- music and fashion?
There is definitely a form of synergy between music and fashion. The two are close. It’s like the artists who we all practically define by their style of music, by the way they dress. The obvious ones are like Lady Gaga and Prince who you know are over the top but you have people like Adele whose sense of style is just as simple and classic as the way she sings or Beyonce, as flashy as you know her costumes are that’s how you know sort of colourful her music is. The two definitely go hand in hand.
How will you describe your personal style?
My own style, I will describe it as eclectic, free, very sort of classic, mixed with a little bit of funk and definitely a lot of Afro infusion.
If you could choose one fashion item that you could have a whole lot of, what will it be?
If I could choose one fashion item that I will love to always have it would be… shoes? Wait, why am I even thinking. It will be shoes, shoes and all day, shoes. I feel like shoes make a statement. I could be wearing something super simple and I could have on a fabulous pair of shoes, and I am good to go.
