Creativity in fashion is at its very base. We need new trends and innovative style in order to express ourselves daily. In an interview with the fashionable twins Olivia and Sylvia Enekwe, founders of popular fashion brand Gozel Green, they share their perspective and ideas about the growing fashion business and how they have navigated through it as sisters and business partners.
What inspires your collection/ designs?
Our parents are a great source of inspiration. Our mother, Mrs. Chioma Josephine Enekwe, studied fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York in the 70’s while our late Dad, Prof. Onuora Osmond Enekwe was a Theatre Art giant, a lover of arts and a Poet. All our collections have been inspired by his poems.
Apart from our parents, we get inspired as well by things around us. Colours, textures, life experiences, people, artworks, nature, our origin, and culture. We are Igbos from the eastern part of Nigeria, Enugu State, where you will find red soil, hills, forests etc. These inspire us a lot. Our brand stays true to our origin, though with the mix of western and urban vibe.
How do you balance creativity and business?
We CLEARLY differentiate the creative aspect by delegating the business side of the company to personnel who specialize in the field. That way we are good to go. We are creatives, that is our strength. So we focus on our strengths and leave the rest to professionals in that field.
What is the biggest lesson you have learnt since you started in the business?
Nothing good comes easy. One has to take baby steps as you progress in any given field. We learnt from our parents that there’s no shortcuts in life. So we always bear that in mind in whatever we do. Also, consistency pays. No matter what you pass through any given career, just be persistent and ONE DAY, you will get to your destination.
What is the favorite part about being sisters in the same business?
Working together has been a huge blessing so far. We always love working together as a team in achieving any set goal. Having a partner is one thing, but having a sister as a partner is another thing. It can never be the same. That’s why we feel blessed for the fact we have one goal and we work together in achieving the set goal. We have been used to doing things together, loving the same sports, food and interestingly same friends too. So now, it’s easier being co-owners of Gozel Green. Even if one of us is away, we always keep ourselves updated on the day to day occurrences. We are twins, YES! But as humans, we come up with different ideas and strategies. Bearing these in mind, we weigh our ideas and methods of approach by putting them on the table, analyzing, and constructively criticizing what we feel doesn’t work best in the set project. This has always been our method throughout our years of designing together and so far, it has been working out great.
Finally, for those struggling with any business venture, they Gozel Green twins live by this mantra and maybe you can too “Never let anyone or anything stop you from pursuing your dreams because if you can think it, you can definitely achieve it. Stay positive and consistent in whatever career you choose. Above all, be prayerful, so that your hard work will be built on a solid foundation”.
