Acne, medically known as Acne Vulgaris, is a skin disease that involves the oil glands at the base of hair follicles. It commonly occurs during puberty when the sebaceous (oil) glands come to life – the glands are stimulated by male hormones produced by the adrenal glands of both males and females. Acne is not dangerous, but can leave skin scars.


The exact cause of acne is unknown, but doctors believe it results from several related factors. One important factor is an increase in hormones called androgens (male sex hormones).

Tips To Help Avoid Breakouts

  1. Avoid Dairy And Other Inflammatory Foods


Dairy and wheat are both mucous producing and increase inflammation in the body. Mucous producing foods can clog pores increasing the chances of a breakout. Do yourself a favor and avoid inflammatory foods for at least 6 weeks to see how you do, as you can react to a food for several weeks to months. You may also want to look into food allergy testing to determine what you are reacting to.

  1. Take Some Zinc


Zinc helps to metabolize androgens, or hormones that can cause breakouts. Taking at least 25- 50 mg of zinc can be helpful to clear these breakout hormones and clear your face. Zinc also helps to strengthen your immune system, which can help to decrease bacteria levels which can also cause breakouts.

  1. Get On A Good Probiotic


Your skin is a reflection of your gut. So, if you do not have the most favorable gut flora or gut bugs or gut microbes then you WILL have skin issues like acne, eczema, and dermatitis. A good probiotic would be something that would be looking for the specific strains such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium acidophilus.


If you have followed all of the above and you are still having issues – get to the dermatologist so they investigate other issues such as hormones and toxicities that may be the underlying cause.
