Everybody seems to have their own way to cure hiccups; holding your breath, rubbing the skin above your eyebrows, and pulling on your earlobes to name a few. But, do they actually work? Here are five actual ways to get rid of the hiccups:
Stretching seems like the easiest way to get moving and rid yourself of the hiccups. You can also try burping, coughing, or getting your friends to tickle the hiccups out of you.
The paper towel method
Put a paper towel over a glass of water, then drink through the towel. You’ll have to pull harder with your diaphragm to suck up the water. The gulping should counteract the hiccups.
A spoonful of peanut
The process of chewing and getting the peanut butter off your tongue and teeth should interrupt your swallowing and breathing patterns. If you’re allergic to peanut butter, you can also try a spoonful of powdered chocolate drink mix (cocoa or Ovaltine).
Stick out your tongue
Sticking out your tongue helps stimulate the vagus nerve and ease diaphragm spasms and avoid gag reflexes. Pulling on your tongue with your fingers should also have the same effect.
There are a few different methods of drinking water you can try like drinking a glass of water through a straw, drinking a bottle of water upside down, or drinking a cup of water without using your hands.
