The former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, who has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services DSS for an alleged economic crime and other offences has been granted freedom by the ECOWAS court on Tuesday. The three man panel ordered the immediate release of the former NSA, the release of his belongings seized by the FG and slammed the FG with damages to the tune of N15M in favour of the former NSA.
The court in its judgment stated that the arrest and continued detention of the former NSA without cause was unconstitutional and a violation of his right to liberty. The judgment of the court also condemned the illegal search conducted on Dasuki’s houses in Abuja and Sokoto without a valid search warrant and his arrest without a warrant of arrest or warrant of detention after he had been granted bail and met the bail conditions too.
According to the court, the Nigerian government took laws into their own hands, which is purely unconstitutional and the rule of law must be adhered to.
