Today the story broke that Nigerians travelling to Brazil were denied payments as Emirates Airlines rejected Nigerian currency from passengers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport MMIA Lagos. Passengers travelling to Brazil were left stranded at the airport despite having bought their tickets weeks earlier. The airline also ensured passengers who had earlier been checked in for 5.55pm for Lagos to Dubai flight didn’t board from the plane.
The management of Emirates explained that the credit card mode of payment in dollars value was inline with the company’s new policy stating all passengers travelling from Nigeria to Brazil must be by credit card and not cash. We only wonder why this policy would be been effected on the same day it was released. One of the effected passengers, a Mr. Obinna said the humiliation was of the highest order and so shameful it is happening on Nigerian soil.
“This is a ticket I bought two weeks ago from Emirates and they collected cash. Besides the fact that it is illegal to reject it for whatever reason, why did they collect the naira when they wanted credit card payment? This is so disgraceful.“
Emirates is yet to release a following statement.
