A lot has been happening in Nigeria with the #EndSARS movement, and we can totally understand if everything that has been happening has an effect on your mental health. That’s why we’ve come up with four ways to manage your mental health:

Take A Break

Unplug. If it’s all getting too overwhelming and it’s starting to affect your mental health, just take a break. Take some time off social media, or take some time off the protest ground and do the things you love to do, such as watch tv, read a book, etc. It might sound selfish, but it isn’t. Remember that you can’t fight if you’re not strong, and I’m not just talking about physical strength. Take a day or two off, rest, and come back re-energized and ready to fight the battle again.

A lot of people underestimate the power of meditation. Wikipedia defines Meditation as a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. Meditation helps in reducing negative emotions and managing stress. If you’re new to this, you can start with guided meditation.

Try to look at the positives

It may look like there are no positives right now with everything going on but there actually are. Think about the fact that this is the first time Nigerian youths have ever come together to fight against a cause, despite ethnicity, religion, sexuality, etc. Think of how organized these protests have been; from the food to the ambulances, to security, down to releasing arrested protesters. These are some of the positives to focus on to encourage you to keep fighting.

Seek help

There’s nothing wrong with seeking professional help. Mentally Aware Nigeria on Twitter has provided helplines you can call just because they knew this would affect the mental health of people. There are people who have been arrested, beaten, shot at and all these things might be affecting them mentally, these people need professional help. Reach out to a therapist, if you can’t afford one, reach out to Mentally Aware Nigeria.
