You know that little rectangular denim pouch just above the front pocket of your jeans (the weird-sized one about three fingers wide and not much deeper)?
Perhaps it’s for coins or keys? For stashing several mints? Or emergency snacking nuts? Or for keeping a tiny Ikea pencil and a memory card safe?
All sensible suggestions, all wrong (and no, it’s not just an annoying fashion thing – this pocket is real and purposeful).
In a Quora forum textile experts cleared things up. One user, Nitin Sachdev wrote:
‘It’s a watch pocket. Back in the 1800s, cowboys used to wear their watches on chains and kept them in their waistcosts. To keep them from getting broken, Levi’s introduced this small pocket where they could keep their watch.’
Levi’s confirms that this little patch of denim is intended for storing a watch. On its website the denim giant also lists some of the other names this pouch has come to be known by over the years: ‘frontier pocket, condom pocket, coin pocket, match pocket and ticket pocket’.
Phew. That’s one less thing we have to wonder about when we should be sleeping.
