Ripped denim is not a new trend but it is getting more popularised and increasing accepted in the fashion world. When it comes to denim, nothing beats that perfectly broken in, rugged and ripped pair of jeans that look like they have been lived in.
The distressed style has fallen in and out of fashion favor since the 1980s, but it seems that lately, they’re more popular than ever.
From Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, to Selena Gomez, among others, street style stars have been pairing ripped up styles with It-bags and popularizing the trend.
The problem with buying already-distressed denim is that you don’t have much control over the rips and you might eventually spend a fortune for the extra feature. If you love the gaping holes at the knees, a few tiny nicks and a series of serious slashes down the leg, then you just have to own a pair and make it suit your style. That’s why, rather than ponying up your hard earned cash for a designer pair, we suggest figuring out how to make ripped jeans yourself.
- Pick Your Denim: The major step is picking the pair of jeans that you want to rock on the streets with the trendy It-bags. It could be skin-tight, boyfriend style, acid wash, black, white, blue, high-waist, cropped, or just any pair you are totally comfortable in.
- Markings: Use a pen, chalk or a safety pin to denote exactly where you want your rips and/or distressed areas. You might want to grab a ruler, too. It’s key to do this while you’re standing.
- Distressing : Lay the denim on a flat surface and rub the marked surface with a sandpaper or pumice stone until the surface starts to thin out., this will make your ripping look authentic.
- Make The Holes: After the distressing process, use a sharp scissors or craft knife to horizontally scrape the marked areas. If you want the threads beneath the denim surface, scrape enough until you see this layer and then fray the threads with a tweezer. If you want a hole that will flaunt your flawless skin, cut out the marked area with the scissors or knife.
