‘Now you see me. And now…um, you still see me.’
By now you’ve realised that you were not the only one who walked out of the cinemas looking a little amazed (or maybe the right word is bewildered) after seeing the first part of Now You See Me. Well the second movie is out in cinemas and you might have few more questions left.
The first movie began with a pretty spectacular plot; albeit minimal character development. However, the contemporary Nigerian audience would have had a couple more questions for the spectacles pulled off by the cast of the movie (“All na juju!”). The movie ended with a cliff-hanger that did well enough to have its audience “spell-bound” till the release of the second movie.
‘Forget all this magic talk sha, this one is clearly juju. Magic ko, magic ni.’
Now You See Me 2 made its successful return to cinemas this June, three years after the debut of its first hit. The story continues with The Four Horsemen- J. Daniel “Danny” Atlas (Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Harrelson), the new addition Lula May (Caplan), and Jack Wilder (Franco). At the end of the first movie, audiences learnt about the secret society that tasked The Horsemen with proving themselves worthy of joining the elite society of Magicians called “The Eye” and that Dylan (Ruffalo) was indeed the fifth Horsemen who had been secretly aiding The Horsemen.
The second movie features great character developments and a seamless transition of characters with the addition of Caplan, who replaced Isla Fisher. The secret society that has become the new benefactor for the horsemen and we finally learn more about The Eye.
The continuity of the movie is saddled on Walter Mabry (Radcliffe) a young technology tycoon who captures the Horsemen and threatens them into using their talents to steal technology robbed off him by his business partner.
‘The cast of Now You See Me 2. They all clearly came to slay.’
The movie seemingly ties up many of the loose ends created in the first movie while leaving us with a few more, just in case of a NYSM 3. And while you’ll leave understanding their magic tricks a little more, their larger than life displays will still leave you in complete awe.
