History has been made by the makeup giant brand CoverGirl as they have just appointed makeup artist James Charles their newest spokesmodel. The CoverBoy who is still a senior in high school will work alongside the brand ambassador Katy Perry. He shared this news with his 440k Instagram followers and said that being a Cover Boy for the brand is “living out one of his life’s biggest dreams.”
In his words, he wrote on his personal Instagram page “I am so honoured and excited to be working with such an iconic brand, I started my Instagram one year ago to inspire others and as an artistic outlet to challenge myself creatively. I truly hope that this shows that anyone and everyone can wear makeup and can do anything if you work hard.”
Not everyone will welcome this with wide arms, as the makeup artist has faced criticisms several times. In an interview with Marie Claire early this year, James Charles acknowledges makeup as just an art form, a means of expressing himself. He said it took him a while to convince his parents that it was not an expression of his gender identity. He told the Magazine “I’m still confident as a boy and I will always be a boy. I can be confident with bare skin and with a full face.”
Way to go James! The new spokesmodel will appear in different ads alongside Katy Perry and also alone. This is a big step for this brand that has been in existence for over 60 years. With moments like this, people are more open to the fluidity of the fashion industry. It is indeed no longer only a woman’s world.
