The silent treatment is ignoring someone in order to punish them for an offense. It involves shutting down and refusing to communicate or converse with your friend or bae.  This can be very painful, as all attempt to talk to the person may be rebuffed. If your partner is giving you the silent treatment, here are hack to dealing with it.

Talk to the person kindly but directly

At some point, you will have to confront your partner, even if he/she doesn’t want to. When that time comes, take a deep breath, clear your mind and talk to your lover. The main question is why the silent treatment?

Look into the reasons for the silent treatment

Sometimes, people who give the silent treatment are not doing it out of malice. You may have done something and they simply do not want to tell. If this is the case, ask from their friends on why they are not talking to you. They would definitely have told someone.

Do not let the silent treatment get to you

One way to cope with silent treatment is to act as if it doesn’t affect you even when it does. Remember that people who give the silent treatment are looking to get a particular reaction out of you. Do not give them that benefit. However, this does not mean you should not reach out to them.

State the limit you can go

If your relationship has been damaged because of the ongoing silent treatment, you may state the limit you can go as well as the consequences of continuing with the treatment. The best you can do is to let them know that you will break things up if they do not end it. This will send a strong signal to them.

Take care of yourself

When someone gives you the silent treatment, it’s easy to get frustrated. If you feel this way, it is better you stop. This is because you have already made efforts to find out the reason (s) for the silent treatment. If they do not change, do not beat yourself over it. Just enjoy yourself and do what makes you happy. If it continues, you may have to quit!
