With all that the rainy season has to offer, there are a few drawbacks — cold and flu season being one of them. So if you’re plagued by a raw, sore throat that makes eating and drinking a pain, try one of these common foods and drinks to help ease the discomfort.

Turmeric

Turmeric is touted as having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, thanks to an active ingredient called curcumin. Incorporate grated turmeric root or powder into your smoothies, teas and soups for a healthy (and colourful) boost.

Smoothies

Soothing and creamy, a smoothie will cool your throat’s red-hot soreness. As a bonus, blueberries contain astringent tannins that soothe sore throats, while bananas are soft and easy to swallow, and are loaded with fibre and flu-fighting vitamin C.

Scrambled eggs

Not only are scrambled eggs easy on the throat, they’re also loaded with protein and omega-6 fatty acids, which can help fight inflammation.

Honey and lemon

One of the most effective remedies to soothe a sore throat is simply to drink a concoction of hot water, honey, and lemon, as honey is actually an effective cough suppressant.

Cooked vegetables

Sadly, being sick isn’t an excuse to skip the veggies. When your throat is scratchy, cook your favourite root vegetables until tender so they’re easier to swallow and digest. They’re chock-full of immunity-boosting nutrients.

Cabbage

Simply eating cabbage can provide so many health benefits, since cabbage is loaded with antioxidants, vitamin C, sulfur and other essential nutrients that can help reduce the inflammation of a sore throat.

Ice cream

Few things are as soothing to a sore throat as a cold treat that eases the pain. If you don’t want to indulge in sugar-laden ice cream, opt for a healthier vegan homemade version.
