Former head of Brazil’s football association Jose Maria Marin has received a jailed term sentence of four years for corruption after he was convicted of accepting bribes from sports marketing companies in exchange for contracts to broadcast tournaments.
He was sentenced in a Brooklyn federal court by Judge Pamela Chen, the first official to be sentenced as part of an American investigation into corruption at FIFA. He is one of the seven FIFA officials arrested at a hotel in Zurich in May 2015.
The 86-year old was fined $1.2m and also ordered to forfeit $3.34m.
Meanwhile, Marin’s lawyers have released a statement saying that they will appeal against the sentence.
