Owing to the fact that we walk a lot, our feet are sometimes irritated and pressured, causing frictions. This in turn makes the skin and soft tissue on our feet thick and hard. This hard formation of tissue is what is known as calluses.


Calluses are rarely painful. They usually develop on the soles of your feet, especially under the heels or balls, on your palms, and/or knees. Calluses vary in size and shape and are often larger than corns. Calluses are not harmful, but can be uncomfortable and annoying. They must therefore, be taken care of before they lead to infection or skin ulceration.

Another thing you should know is that calluses are not for the feet only, they are also common on the fingers, but it’s usually found on people that pressure their hands a lot. Sometimes calluses may go away on its own but many times its best to get rid of it yourself.

There are several ways to deal with calluses:


The Normal Way

  1. Get a bowl of warm/hot water and soak your feet in it for about ten minutes, adding bath oil, tea or Epsom salt if you like. Note that if your calluses are pretty tough, its best to add cider vinegar (people with poor circulation and diabetes should steer clear).
  2. Get a pumice stone (scrubbing stone) or a foot file and then gently scrub your feet/hands. Repeat this action, several times, soaking your feet each time it gets dry.
  3. Once you are done scrubbing (do not over scrub), wash your feet/hands and make sure they are rid of all dead skin.
  4. Using a towel, pat your feet dry and then apply moisturizing feet/hand lotion to your hands/feet (wear a glove or socks if you are going to bed or if not wear socks on soft flip flops).

This process should be repeated at the end of each week.

Some Baking Soda Action 

Baking soda does have a lot of action and that includes getting rid of calluses,

  1. Soak your feet in worm/hot water, which would help heal and loosen the dead cells.
  2. Add 3 table spoons of baking soda or you can skip the hot water and simply massage with a thick paste of baking soda.

Useful Pineapple

Don’t just throw your peels away; they can be useful if you have calluses. This is because they contain specific enzymes which help to soften and remove calluses.

  1. Just place a piece of a pineapple peel (fresh) on the affected part and wrap with a clean cloth
  2. Repeat this action every night for a week.

Aspirin to the Rescue

Aside from curing headaches, aspirin can be used on calluses (if you are allergic to aspirin or you have diabetes please steer clear of this technique);

  1. Get six tablets of aspirin and then grind into a powdery form, mixing the powder with 1 or 2 table spoons of lemon juice and water (make sure it’s a thick paste).
  2. Apply the paste to the affected areas, wrap the affected area up with a warm towel and cover with a plastic bag, leaving it to set for ten minutes at least.
  3. Use a pumice stone (scrubbing stone) to scrape off the calluses.

Tip: It’s easier to prevent calluses than to get rid of them. Simply change your footwear to a softer and more comfortable one, or use pads on your shoes. Also, do not use any acidic callus removals.
