For a long time, the issue of female empowerment has been a worldwide debate. There has been a constant debate on the female oppression and gender equality. It is safe to say that the world has almost fully accepted this. This idea seems to just be taking root. Nigeria is a predominantly male society. Most sectors are ruled by men. We have men earning way more than most women in organisations. This doesn’t necessarily mean they might be the most competent for the job. As long as he doesn’t have to go on maternal leave. He’s good!
The sector that I will say women have had the opportunity to rule in is fashion. Fashion is said to be a woman’s world. The biggest names and brands in the industry are owned by women. Some male counterparts can be identified but the ladies still rule.
There are so many sectors of the Nigerian fashion industry that have been tapped by the women. Think of high-end couture, what comes to mind? Someone that comes to mind would be Deola Sagoe. Thriving media forms in the fashion industry such as Bella Naija and Genevive are owned by… hold your breaths, yes! Women. One day, if you think you have so much time on your hand, walk into at least ten tailoring shop and you will see that maybe six are owned and managed by women. The idea is they just have to have the eye for fashion. And we are not complaining. I just wish people will come to the realization that there are so many other sectors we can assert ourselves other than the fashion sector.
I can go on and mention a few of the powerful women in fashion but we have an earlier post to educate you on that. Thinking of the power we have in the industry, I think I am going to go back to bed and watch Devil wears Prada over and over again. Make sure you play Beyonce’s Run the World before bed. Dream big and maybe you will part of the women wave taking over another sector.
