After days of searching, police have confirmed that Naya Rivera has died, at age 33. Her body was recovered Monday morning at the lake where she disappeared last week.
Naya Rivera went missing on Wednesday, July 9, after renting a boat with her four-year-old son, Josey Hollis Dorsey, for a day out on California’s Lake Piru. Her son was found asleep and safe on the boat. According to the LA Times, Ventura County Sheriff’s Captain Eric Buschow said the pair went swimming; Josey returned to the boat, but Naya did not.
Her son, Josey told investigators that his mother, boosted him back on to the deck of their rented boat before he looked back and saw her disappearing under the water, authorities said. “She must have mustered enough energy to get her son back on the boat, but not enough to save herself,” Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said at a news conference. Josey was found asleep and alone in a life vest on the drifting pontoon boat about three hours after he and his mother launched on Lake Piru, setting off a five-day search that ended with the discovery of Naya’s body floating near the surface early on Monday.
“As you can imagine, it has been an extremely difficult time for her family throughout this ordeal,” the Ventura County sheriff said. “Our hearts are with them and we share in their grief for Naya’s loss. Our hearts also go out to Naya’s many friends and fans who have been holding out hope for the best over the past few days.… Naya’s family has expressed their gratitude for all involved in the search efforts.”
Naya was best known for her work on Glee, where she played the sharp-tongued cheerleader Santana Lopez from 2009 to 2015.
