Halle Berry has backed out of a film role, after receiving backlash on some remarks she made about a character she was set to play, in an upcoming movie.
On her Instagram live over the weekend, Halle spoke about the potential movie role, where she would portraying the character of a transgender man.
“It’s really important to me to tell stories, and that’s a woman, that’s a female story, it changes to a man, but I want to understand the why and how of that. I want to get into it,” Berry said.
Her viewers and trans community didn’t however take things lightly with her, quoting on her misuse of pronouns and she taking up the role of trans character, when there are a lot of trans actors out there, looking for roles.
People took offense with a non-trans person portraying a trans character, while some other people were upset with the pronouns and descriptions Halle used in describing the character as “she,” “it,” and “female.”
Halle took a step, and responded to the backlash on Twitter, saying “I’d like to apologize for those remarks. As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the trangender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories.”
She added, “I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”
There have been numerous actors who have taken up roles of trans or LGBTQIA characters in movies, and have perfectly executed the roles. The backlash Halle received could be said to be quite unnecessary, but it’s also understandable, in a world where there’s discrimination against transgenders and members of the LGBTQIA, this was only a step towards ensuring acceptance and equal opportunities for all.
