Our first meal of the day is always important as it sets the tone for what our energy levels will be like. Too much sugar or caffeine could result in grogginess and not eating anything at all could make you tired. Whole grains and other foods rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals (your race-morning breakfast) can tilt a bit more toward simple carbs (I know, good news). With the Access Bank marathon coming up its important that we start our day with nutrients that will keep your energy levels high. So, we’ve compiled a list of energy inducing healthy breakfast recipes for you to try out.

Avocado and eggs

Our favourite and most simple combination. Egg is high in protein so it’s great as the first meal of the day. Avocado is full of healthy fats, which have been shown to enhance the way your body absorbs nutrients and can also be stored by your body to be used as energy sources. Just grab a whole grain toast, spread some with mashed up avocado sprinkled with salt and pepper, and layer it with some sunny side up eggs.

A simple bowl of oatmeal is the perfect meal to have in the morning before the. Its quick to make but most importantly versatile. You can make all sorts of recipes with oatmeal as a base, such as overnight oats, oatmeal pancakes, oatmeal cookies, etc. This grain lowers your risk for heart disease, regulates blood sugar levels and lowers cholesterol. Most importantly it’s a whole food that will break down to become energy that’s slowly absorbed by your body. Which means its energy that will last for most of the day.

Peanut butter, banana on toast and flaxseeds

Packed with an amazing array of nutrients this combo is another favourite as it satisfies your sweet and salty cravings. Peanut butter is packed with protein, while bananas are high in potassium and flaxseeds are loaded with omega-3 and high in protein content. Certainly, a must eat to keep your energy level high for the long run.

This contains all your essentials for slow burning energy. Packed with fruits, nuts and whole grain muesli is the perfect meal to start your marathon filled morning. These contents are known for being packed with slow burning energy. It’s also quick and easy to make especially when you’re in rush.
