The urban dictionary is taking over. Like seriously, I’m not even joking. With the popularity of the internet, whenever in doubt, we just bring out our phones and Google the word and more often than not we end up on the urban dictionary.
Now, don’t get me wrong, this comes in handy many at times. But, I kinda miss the ole days of whooping out our Oxford advanced English and getting real definitions to real words.
P.S: just in case you’ve been living under a rock for a while and don’t know what the urban dictionary is… the urban dictionary is an online dictionary of slang words and phrases usually compiled by the general public.
This simply means that I can go to their website, sign up and just randomly add a word with my definition and bam, its official.
The problem with this is that a lot of people don’t actually get the memo that this is a “pop cultured” dictionary and end up taking its definitions as Holy Grail and in the end embarrass themselves when they use an “urban dictionary” word in a formal setting.
Please, if you are in a debate on a word in a serious or formal setting, I beg you in the name of all you hold dear; do NOT consult the urban dictionary so you don’t end up looking like Jane the dumb.
There are online and mobile versions of REAL dictionaries that you can still consult in spur of the moment situations.
So, do yourself a favour honey and use a dictionary not a street lingo word list. You’ll thank me later.
