Your identity begins with how you perceive yourself and all the traits or characteristics that make you who you are. This determines how you show up to the world, the actions you take and the words you speak, the causes you firmly stand behind, the relationships you nurture and the way others see you. It is essentially the representation of your beliefs, core values, strengths, weaknesses, past and current experiences. However, it is easy to lose this perception of yourself and by doing so, lose control of who you are.
Owning your identity can only happen when you have a true sense of self. This involves admitting to yourself that even though your identity is always evolving, you must remain true to yourself. People who own their identities do not solely rely on society or other people’s definitions of who they are or can be. Rather, they define who they are and use this level of self awareness to determine what they want out of life and how they can achieve it.
If you find yourself struggling with figuring out your identity, there are a bunch of actions you can take to make it easier. Here are some of them.
– Reinforce and reaffirm your strengths- If you can memorise all the steps you need to prepare your favourite dish, then you should memorise all the things you are highly skilled at. Your list of strengths should be at your fingertips, ready to be used at every opportunity.
