Cutting an onion releases an enzyme that combines to form acids that break down into a gas called propanethiol S-oxide. These enzymes cause eye irritation, due to which you start tearing up. If you want to stop the tears while chopping onion, you can start following these methods.
Light a candle
Slice an onion close to an open flame because the sulfuric compounds will react with the flame.
Put bread in your mouth
Chewing a piece of bread will help in eliminating tears while cutting an onion because sulfuric compounds are absorbed by the bread before they can reach your eyes.
Chewing gum helps you breathe through your mouth so that the irritants don’t hit your eyes.
Freeze the onion
Freeze the onions for about 15 minutes before chopping them as it slows down the reaction and reduces the amount of acid enzyme into the air.
Try wearing a pair of goggles while cutting an onion because the fumes will not reach your eyes.
Use a sharp knife
Cutting an onion by using a sharp knife can cause less damage to onion cell walls and fewer irritants will be released. This helps in avoiding unnecessary tears.
Use a spoon
If you don’t want to shed tears before cutting an onion, pop a spoon into your mouth before you begin cutting the onions.
Cut the onion underwater
Chopping an onion under running water will prevent the sulfuric compounds from reaching your eyes and won’t make you cry.
Rub lemon juice on the blade of the knife
Rub a lemon slice on the blade of your knife before cutting the onion.
