Do you love ice cream? Do you love it a bit more than is appropriate? You’re not alone, as new research indicates that ice cream can be as addictive as drugs. This study suggests that ice cream can leave people feeling addicted in the same way as a person who is using illegal drugs. Researchers have found that our cravings for ice cream actually mimic the cravings of drug addicts when they want their next hit. Ice cream has the same effect on the brain as cocaine, believe it or not.
According to the study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, overeating high-fat or high-sugar food changes the way in which the brain responds to the food. While many of us see ice cream as a treat or a reward, if we eat a lot of it, the brain downgrades the reward we feel from eating it.
The study involved feeding people chocolate milkshakes made with Haagen-Dazs ice cream while their brains were scanned with a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machine. The study found that those who ate the most ice cream throughout the study, which lasted a few weeks, started to crave it more but enjoy it less. over eating of high-fat or high-sugar foods alters how the brain responds to those foods, which makes it crave more and more of them.
The scanned images showed that while all of the people involved experienced euphoria upon eating the ice cream, as the weeks passed, the people who were eating more ice cream had to continually up their intake in order to experience the same levels of excitement and happiness as the people who weren’t eating as much.
