Idris Elba is making his directorial debut with the production of ‘Yardie’, the movie, which will shoot on location in London and Jamaica for seven weeks.
Yardie is a movie about a young Jamaican named “D”, played by Aml Ameen, who arrives in London in the early 1980s and inadvertently found the man who murdered his respected brother in Jamaica a decade earlier.
His quest for vengeance clouded his thinking as he went after the killers.
This resulted in a chaotic street war, which eventually puts both himself and the lives of his loved ones in danger.
Studiocanal released the first image from the set of the film, which sees Elba in a directorial role. Interestingly, he has a supporting role in the movie.
Elba said: “I am interested in making human stories with characters that are either full of grace or flawed. In ‘Yardie,’ the audience will see a film that hopefully means something to the people. I’m honoured to able to shoot it in my hometown of London and as a guest in Jamaica.”
The movie is produced by Robin Gutch and Gina Carter for Warp Films and co-financed by Studiocanal, the BFI, BBC Films and Screen Yorkshire.
