Issa Rae is in the early development stages on her remake of the 1996 cult classic Set It Off, Variety reports. Issa will produce and possibly star in the film. The original movie, an ensemble crime thriller from director F. Gary Gray about a group of female bank robbers, starred Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, and Kimberly Elise.
“Set It Off,” was a solid performer at the box office with a $41 million gross on a $9 million budget for a story about four close friends who pull off a series of successful bank robberies in Los Angeles
Most importantly, Set It Off starred four women at the forefront as they exhibited the same character complexities that seemed to only be reserved for the roles of their male counterparts. Rae co-created HBO’s Insecure, on which she acted as writer, executive producer and actress. Earlier this year, she starred in the Universal comedy Little with Regina Hall and Marsai Martin.
