Injury prone Joel Embiid, who has played just 31 games over his three seasons in the NBA, has agreed to a five-year deal worth $148m with the Philadelphia 76ers which could increase by $30m over the next few years depending on his performances.
According to reports from the Sixers camp,Embiid could earn the ‘Super Max’, meaning he’d be able to be paid a high percentage of the team’s salary cap. If the centre makes All-NBA teams, wins the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, or the NBA’s Most Valuable Player, then he could be in for that added bonus; potentially up to $US178 million.
The Cameroonian has suffered injuries to his back, knees, and feet throughout his stay with the club.Which is why the 76ers will have salary cap protection if Embiid suffers another long-term injury included in the deal.
The 23-year old averaged 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game for the 76ers in the 2016-17 regular season and will love to repay the faith put in him as they prepare for the new season.
