The role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s trilogy of Lord Of The Rings films was ultimately taken on by Viggo Mortensen. He was a late replacement for Stuart Townsend, who left the role four days into shooting when Peter Jackson felt that the actor was too young for the part. But did you know that Mortensen wasn’t the first choice?
The gist is this- Nicolas Cage was actually given the role of Aragon in the epic movie and he declined the role. According to Peter Jackson, he felt that Nicolas was best for the role but Cage told him that he quoted, “there were different things going on in my life at the time that precluded me from being able to travel and be away from home for three years”. Although, somehow, he managed to see the upside of not being involved in one of the most successful and acclaimed movie trilogies of all time.
“The thing is about those movies, I can watch them. I can enjoy them as an audience member. I don’t really watch my own movies. And so I genuinely do have the joy of watching these – especially with Lord Of The Rings” he said.
Also, he declined the role of Neo in the sold out movie, The Matrix. The question is this- if he had played the role of Aragorn, would he have being a better Aragorn than Viggo Mortensen? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.
