Another year of epic milestone was recorded as the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon held its fourth edition in Lagos on February 2, 2019.
This year’s race saw hundreds of thousands troop into the metro city to join the race and cheer the runners. While the race itself was historical, there were highlights of the event that mad it even more memorable and talk-worthy. We’ll give you a rundown:
Ethiopians ruled the marathon: This year, the Ethiopians finally overthrew the consistent wins of the Kenyans by claiming the 42km grand prize title and prize in both the male and female categories. Sintayehu Legese emerged winner of the 2019 Lagos City Marathon in the male category, while Meleka Meseret Dinke claimed the title for the females.
Male and Female Nigerians claimed same positions: A Nigerian made it into the top ten winners of the race this year, with Mr Sunday Manasa coming in sixth place in the 42 km race. Meanwhile, in the female category, Deborah Pam came in sixth place as well in the female category, but first Nigerian.
Rain: The rains did not stop the race, as runners, cheer leaders and paramedics stood against all odds to conquer the distance. Luckily, the rain stayed put in the sky even long after the first winner of the race emerged.
Olamide, D’Banj and Teni The Entertainer rocked the venue at the finishing point.
Children: There were children who came to the race with their families and made it through the 10 km race as well. It was an epic day all in all.
Dignitaries: Among many dignitaries that made it to the race were the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwumi Ambode; MD/CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe; MD of Diamond Bank, Uzoma Dozie, amongst others.
All in all, the race proved that Nigerians are resilient, strong-willed and determined people and Access Bank/Diamond Bank stand #TogetherForYou.
